Birth of the Idea

It was the 1990s.

I stepped out of my Merchant Navy job full of energy and confidence keen to make a new beginning for myself.

It was also the turn of the millennium and people across the world were taking stock of their lives and thinking about the way the world should be in the 2000s. A result of many such deliberations was a document called the Earth Charter. Its preamble began momentously; it said “We stand at a critical moment in Earth’s history, a time when humanity must choose its future.”

These words made me think long and hard about consequences. I realised whatever I chose to make a living out of would inevitably leave an impact on the world. Whether it was a good impact or a negative one was my choice. I chose good.

They say ways open up for the one who knows where he’s going. That’s what happened with me. During my travels in the Himalayas (Uttarakhand) I spent time with NGOs and farmer groups who were practicing organic farming. They trusted me enough to let me support them in building markets for the Ayurvedic herbs they were growing organically.

With them were my first steps on the way to doing good. I was supporting small farmers who were doing their bit to save the earth and us from pesticides and harmful chemicals. Marketing support was vital for them as it was directly connected to their livelihoods. Getting assured and fair payments for their produce was a welcome alternative to being exploited by the middlemen in the mandis (local market places).

Building a Circle of Goodness

To build markets and help small farmers get fair prices Vedicare Ayurveda Pvt Ltd was set up. It sourced herbs directly from farmers and NGOs to supply to national and international customers. This effort to promote organic produce stood everyone in good stead. The soil, the environment, the farmer, the customer, and us.

Soon we realised this circle of goodness had to expand if we were to work with more farmers and bring more organic ingredients into people’s lives. We created SoulTree, a line of natural beauty products that would be made only with natural and organically grown Ayurvedic herbs.

No Good Comes from Shortcuts

When we began research into natural cosmetics we found most brands offering 7-day challenges or ‘overnight princess’ transformations. It was alarming because this is not the way of nature. Natural herbs are, no doubt, full of benefits but they show only through sustained use. It is synthetic chemicals in cosmetics that are often the agents of ‘overnight’ change. And like most chemicals they come with their side effects. Greying hair in the 20s, wrinkles and pigmentation in the early 30s and on a more drastic level, rising instances of cancer.

SoulTree had to be everything these quick-fix brands were not. It had to be about taking responsibility to come up with wholesome and healthy beauty solutions. Solutions without harmful side effects. Solutions that took care to fix skincare, hair care and beauty issues from the inside. Solutions that endured.

Ancient Wisdom and German Innovation

Enduring beauty solutions we found in Ayurveda, in ancient texts and in the pioneering works of certain German companies who created effective cosmetics without harmful chemicals (derived predominantly from petrochemicals). Thus inspired, we began developing natural cosmetics to make one feel good and look good inside and out.

3 years in the lab. 3 crew members (one chemist, one 70-year-old Ayurvedic Doctor, and 1 driven entrepreneur) and unlimited sleepless nights produced our first set of 5 natural cosmetics to receive BDIH Germany’s ‘Natural’ certification.

Today, there are 60 beauty products in SoulTree’s range. All made in-house from Ayurvedic extracts using natural and certified organic raw materials.

In our labs the search and research continues. There is much to discover about nature and nurture. Because there’s a lot of space in our world for good.
