Greeshma Ritu - All You Need to Know About the Season of Calmness

Greeshma Ritu or the Summer season brings the bright sun and rustling dry leaves. Greeshma is the Sanskrit word that means summer and Ritu mean season. Greeshma Ritu comprises two months, Jyeshtha and Ashadha masa which falls between Mid-May to Mid-July.

Among panchamahabhutas (five elements of nature), Agni tattva or fire element is predominant during this season which directly influences the Pitta dosha of the body. Pitta dosha is associated with fire, moisture, body heat, metabolism and transformation that takes place in the body.

Which Dosha is associated with Greeshma?

Greeshma or Summer season is believed to be the season of Pitta, fire element. Pitta has the characteristics of being hot and dry and we feel the loss of energy in the body, which is why it is called the Adana Kala period. The humidity in the air makes your skin oily.

On the other hand, this dry season enhances anxiety in Vata Dosha. It disrupts digestion as the body suffers extreme dryness inside out, whereas Kapha dosha is relaxed during this season. The ones with Pitta as their dominant dosha experience increased heat in the body.

Summer being the hottest season of the year demands you to take care of your diet, lifestyle, and habits. Let’s read further, about how to naturally balance out increased Pitta in Greeshma Ritu.

Diet for Greeshma Ritu

Digestive problems are quite common during the summer season as the Pitta is already high, and consuming extra oily, spicy food and caffeine increases 'tapa' (heat) in the body.

Ayurveda suggests taking lighter, less oily and spicy meals during the summer months for an easy digestion process. Foods which are easy to process and are known for their Madhura (sweet), Snigdha (unctuous), Sheera (cool), and Drava (fluid) Guna. Foods like rice and lentils should be chosen when extreme heat is prevalent.

During Pitta season, one should completely avoid Katu (sharp) and Amla (acrid) taste and Ushna (warm) meals as it promotes heat in the body and invites unnecessary health problems like acidity and heartburn.

Consuming a lot of fluids, like buttermilk, tender coconut water, fresh fruit juices, mango juice, and stirred curd with pepper powder, will help you stay hydrated throughout the day. Taking a glass of milk with little sugar at night will help you get a sound sleep.

Favorable Lifestyle for Summer Season

Applying sandalwood and aromatic pastes over the body is beneficial during the summer season as it cools down the extreme heat in the body. Protecting yourself from the harmful sun rays by staying in cool places will save you from falling prey to the heatwaves. Wearing light clothes and napping in the daytime is also recommended for the summer season.

The moon known as Soma is believed to cause the 'visarga effect', which is cool in nature and leaves a cooling and soothing effect on the mind and body. Amidst midnight one can relax under the moonlight to balance out the Pitta dosha.
