Layer the Skin the Right Way for the Best Results!

Establishing a proper skincare routine that suits your skin type, concerns, and needs has become an essential part of our daily lives. With the increasing awareness of what we put on our skin, navigating the vast array of skincare products available on the market can be overwhelming.

Skincare has become an essential part of our daily lives, and for a good reason. Our skin is the largest organ in our body, constantly exposed to various environmental factors such as pollution, UV rays, and harsh weather conditions. Therefore, taking care of our skin is crucial for maintaining healthy and youthful-looking skin.

We consulted our in-house Ayurvedic experts, who provided valuable insight into why layering is crucial and how to create a proper skincare ritual. Read on to learn the correct ritual and how to apply them.

Why is layering so important?
Layering skincare products is essential as each product is formulated differently, with a unique purpose and ingredients. Layering involves applying different skin care products in a particular order to maximise their benefits. Each product has a unique formulation and ingredients that serve a specific purpose, and by layering them correctly, we can ensure that they work together to provide optimal results.

What is the correct order of application?
One rule of thumb to follow blindly while creating a skincare ritual is that always start layering with the lightest formulation. It is easier for thinner formulations to penetrate the skin than the thicker formulations. Starting with the lightest formulation, such as those with a watery base, is crucial as thinner formulations can penetrate the skin better than thicker ones.

Below is the correct order to apply skincare products:

Cleanse: The first step of any beauty regime begins with cleansing your face. Washing the face first thing in the morning and before going to bed to remove makeup, grime, and oil secretion is necessary. For any product to get properly absorbed, your skin needs to be squeaky clean.

Exfoliate: After cleansing, exfoliation is necessary to remove dead skin cells and promote cell turnover. This step allows the skin to absorb products more effectively, resulting in a smoother and more radiant complexion. Using a mild exfoliant two to three times a week keeps the skin fresh and clean.

Tone: Often, the most underrated step in any beauty regimen is using a toner. Depending on your skin type, toners also keep your skin hydrated and prevent clogging. Toning is often an overlooked step in skincare routines, but it is crucial for restoring the skin's natural pH balance and minimising open pores. Toning also prepares the skin for the next steps in your skincare ritual.

Serum: Next, applying a serum is a crucial step that provides intense nourishment and hydration to the skin. Serums have a lightweight consistency that penetrates deeply into the skin, providing a boost of nutrients that your skin needs.

Eye Cream: Eye creams are formulated to target the delicate under-eye area and reduce fine lines, dark circles, and puffiness. Applying eye cream before heavier formulations ensures that the area is well-hydrated and prepped for further products. Remember to dab the under-eye cream instead of tugging your skin.

Moisturiser & Face Oil: Applying a hydrating moisturiser is one the most important steps in any beauty ritual. Moisturising is an important step in a skincare routine that helps to lock in moisture and protect the skin's barrier from external damage. For those with dry skin, adding a facial oil before moisturising can provide an extra boost of hydration.

Sunscreen: The final step before completing your skincare ritual is to apply sunscreen. Sunscreen protects the skin from harmful UV rays, preventing premature ageing and reducing the risk of skin cancer. Remember to apply sunscreen on your face and neck 20 minutes prior to stepping out of the house.

It is important to note that every individual has a unique skin type, and what works for one person may not work for another. Therefore, consulting with a dermatologist before trying out new products or incorporating new rituals is highly recommended. By following these guidelines and consulting with a professional, we can achieve healthy, radiant, and flawless skin.
